An interesting story about old Victorian occultists. A man is hypnotized on the brink of death, and continues to speak from beyond the grave. It's not a particularly scary story, so much as intriguing. I've seen the same basic idea used recently on the NoSleep Podcast, in "My Brother Kept Talking" by Robert Ahern, which has a greater focus on horror. Poe's story doesn't look all too much at the information provided by Valdemar. It's really more of a "hey, we did it!" sort of tale, with just the tiniest of implications at the end.

This story is in the public domain. I listened to the free audio production from Librivox's 5th ghost and horror collection.
I found out about this short story, as well as “The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, Nantucket,” both by Edgar Allen Poe, from a reference by Bart Dawes, protagonist of Richard Bachman/Stephen King’s book “Roadwork,” related to what happens to a person at the moment of death. This was a freebie from /, as is the other work.

In this short story, the narrator is a hypnotist (“mesmerist,” in his terms). He is interested in what may happen if a person is mesmerized “in articulo mortis,” a Latin phrase meaning “at the moment of death.” His particular interest is if death can be put off or otherwise interfered with by this process. His subject is a sickly friend, M. Valdemar, who is dying of phthisis, an old term meaning pulmonary tuberculosis (see, you learn something new every day), Valdemar had hitherto been a willing subject of the narrator’s hypnotism experiments and is very willing to participate in this one. There are a couple of doctors and a medical student who are monitoring Vadlemar’s vitals throughout this process. And when the moment comes and Valemar is put under the trance…well, that would spoil the ending, wouldn’t it? Interesting little story, even if one must sort of trudge through the 19th Century English, but it does not disappoint. Recommended!
